Sometimes you stumble upon situations so terrible that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of destruction and just resigns itself to fate, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

The rest of the day was even worse. Everything. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I reached my destination, I was utterly defeated. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
